Team India topper Shreyas Iyer, who scored a hat-trick and half-century in the T20 series against Sri Lanka, is in the midst of a heated debate in cricket circles over whether he is the right replacement for Team India star batsman Virat Kohli, who has not been performing as well as expected in recent times.
He opined that it would not make sense to compare and compete with star batsman Virat Kohli for the prosperity he is currently enjoying in his career. He said that no one can compete for Kohli’s position in any team India in the format. While Kohli’s thirst for centuries is true, the former Team India captain backtracked on the fact that he did not perform well enough to be left out of the squad. Kohli told critics that the competition for Kohli’s place in the team was a good thing and that there was no reason to underestimate Kohli, who has a solid history.
In the T20s, Kohli suggested that he should come in one-on-one and put Shreyas in the fourth or fifth position. Kohli, leaving aside the issue of Shreyas’ competition, said that Suryakumar Yadav has also been joining in recent times and that he will have to compete with Shreyas for a place in the final squad. Kohli, on the other hand, played Shreyas in the regular T20s in One Down. Regarding Kohli, it would be better to open with Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, Kohli, who has voluntarily retired from the recent T20 series against Sri Lanka, is gearing up for the two-match Test series starting March 4 with Sri Lanka. This is the 100th Test match of Kohli’s career
